Chimney Cap Installation
We bid to custom build a new chimney cap. We also bid to frame up the top of the open chimney with 2×4’s and ½ inch plywood decking in order to give the cap support and now wholly rely on the strength of the metal.
In order to do this job, we first took off the old cap. Then we framed the top of the chimney with sturdy 2×4’s and 1/2 inch plywood decking. We had previously custom built a new cap. The metal used for the new cap was “Paint Grip” metal, 26 gauge. We installed the cap on the new framework and then re-installed the actual existing chimney flu that had to come off before the cap came off. The rock walls on the chimney made attention to detail very important. Usually, we deal with siding or brick walls.
Results of this Chimney Cap Installation
This job turned out very well. The original cap was not designed to be fastened in the side walls. The fasteners had created holes in the top of the chimney cap that had rusted out and caused leaks. In preparing the chimney for the new cap, we built a framework that allowed for the new cap to be fastened in the sides. This was necessary because the chimney is a rock chimney.
