This particular client had a relatively new roof that was leaking. She called us to come out and inspect her roof. We bid to pull up the shingles, find the problem, and fix it. Unlike some roofing problems, we could not identify the problem simply by looking at the roof, so we had to inspect a bit before identifying the cause of the leak.
Cause of This Roof Leak
The roof was fairly flat with relatively new shingles on it! It was installed skillfully but the proper underlayment was not used upon initial installation. The roofing company that installed the roof used regular 15 pound felt which was not good enough for such a low pitch. Low pitched roofs need heavier underlayment for more protection from water and moisture getting in.
Repairing the Roof Leak
We pulled up the shingles and found that a piece of decking had popped up and made a hole in the felt paper. If it was a steeper roof, it would not have mattered because the water would just have run off. However, because it was such a low slope, water was backing up and finding it’s way into the attic. In order to repair this roofing problem, we screwed down the raised decking and patched the hole with an ice and water shield patch. We then re-shingled over the patch.
Repair Results
This was a unique job because the roof was only five years old. Usually, roofs that have been recently installed do not cause problems. It only took us a few hours, however, to complete the roof repair. Our client was extremely satisfied because we worked quickly and efficiently to repair her roof.
